Argentina requests provisional application of Mercosur-EU agreement

The National Government requested the provisional application of the trade agreement sealed between Mercosur and the European Union following its sanction in the Senate. The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, Pablo Quirno, from his account on X. 'From the promulgation of the law approving the Mercosur-European Union Agreement and the presentation before Mercosur and the European Union of the corresponding notes, Argentina has formally requested the provisional application of the agreement as approved last January,' he summarized. 'The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called a press conference this morning to confirm this.' The full text of the annexes is available in the web edition of the Official Gazette of the Argentine Republic (BORA). Subsequently, President Javier Milei promulgated the agreement. The understanding was signed on January 17, 2026, in the city of Asunción, Republic of Paraguay, between the member states of Mercosur—the Argentine Republic, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republic of Paraguay, and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay—and the European bloc. The agreement consists of 23 chapters, along with their annexes and appendices, which are an integral part of the norm approved by the Parliament. 'Argentina will be prosperous,' he concluded. After the Senate's approval, Milei already promulgated the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. The official followed the session from one of the boxes in the chamber and celebrated the approval of the support for the understanding, which obtained 69 votes in favor and only three against.
